Because the first time I got raped, my boyfriend broke up with me because I had “cheated” on him.
Because the word “rape” is considered a joke.
Because over 70% of women let their partners fuck them when they don’t want it.
Because 17% of American women have been the victim of sexual assault at some point in their lives.
Because only 39% of rapists get reported to the police, and only 3% of them go to jail.
Because about 13% of the rape victims commit suicide.
Because the first time I got raped, he put a knife to my throat and told me he would kill me if I said I didn’t want it.
Because when I wanted to report him, people told me I couldn’t because I hadn’t said “no” to him.
Because at least half of all babies born to minor women are fathered by adult men. (10+ years age difference)
Because I can’t wear a skirt without being told “I’m asking for it.”
Because when I went to a party when I was 14 and I wore a skirt and a guy kept touching my ass all night, my mother told me it shouldn’t have happened if I wore sweatpants.
Because a 16 year old girl who had her first orgasm while getting raped, had to watch her 34 (!) year old rapist go free because she had had an orgasm.
Because when my guy friend told me and some friends he got raped by a women when he was 12, a “friend” laughed at him and said he should be happy he got laid that young.
Because my 17 year old best friend’s parents let her 14 year old brother walk outside until 12pm, but she has to be home at 10.
Because a guy from my old school got raped by another guy, but because he is gay, they said it wasn’t considered rape.
Because a 19 year old lesbian got raped by a guy, and he didn’t go to prison because he said “he only tried to turn her straight so she would get accepted by her parents”
Because in some cultures, girls (and boys) still get thrown out of the family because some guy/girl sexually assaulted them.
Because they’re still teaching girls to walk faster at night instead of teaching guys they shouldn’t rape.
Because I have to explain why rape makes me angry.

If you’re protesting abortion, the Supreme Court says you can get right in women’s faces and scream at them on their way into the clinic. Because freedom of speech.

But if you try and protest the murder of a black man, you get tear gas fired at you.

fuck-yeah-feminist

Just take a minute to let that sink in. Think about how little our justice system— and culture as a whole — values black lives.

Potent minimalist art sends a strong message about police and vigilante brutality in America

Journalist and artist Shirin Barghi has created a gripping, thought-provoking series of graphics that not only examines racial prejudice in today’s America, but also captures the sense of humanity that often gets lost in news coverage. Titled “Last Words,” the graphics illustrate the last recorded words by Brown and other young black people — Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and others — who have been killed by police in recent years.

Let us not forget their voices

I (Hayley Banyai-Becker), recently traveled to the incredible country of Belize in Central America. The experience was amazing for many reasons but there is one thing I will never forget. Which is when our group visited children at the Santa Elena R.C. Primary School. We brought them school supplies, learned about and toured the school, and played with them for a few hours.

By the end, these children really touched my heart and left a huge impact on me and I know we also left a large impact on them. I promised I would mail them the pictures we all took together but when I began working on this I began to realize that I needed to do more. These children do not have anywhere near the amount of toys, gadgets, school supplies, etc. that we do here in the United States and I want to be able to change this, even if only a little bit.

The schools teachers are provided a very small amount of supplies (I believe it was something around two pieces of chalk, an eraser and a pencil sharpener) and it is supposed to last them an entire semester. Obviously, that is not the case and these teachers spend a lot of their own money on school supplies (i.e. pencils, erasers, classroom posters, paper, coloring items, books) solely because they care about these children and want to provide them with an education.

All children deserve an education and we can help by providing the school and teachers with money to buy the tools to do so. The school teachers and community at Santa Elena R.C. Primary School truly care about their students and want them to succeed but they just need a little bit of help and we can be the help.

Please, if you would like to help, donate as little as $1 or as much as you can to help provide these children with the school supplies they need so that they can receive the education they deserve. Every cent I receive will be sent directly to the school to be used solely for school supplies for the children. I cannot wait to start helping! :)
